PROJECT INFO
Synopsis

Off-duty from his job with the USFS, 30yo. Zach takes a housesitting gig for his aunt and uncle. Spending time in a remote landscape, he reconnects with his ex-girlfriend Ellyn, working playfully to rekindle their old bond. Gradually, the two begin to experience a series of strange events and unexplainable phenomena.

Countering depictions of menacing beings and fear-based scenarios, A MORNING LIGHT will infer that extraterrestrial visitation stems from an ecological standpoint— nurturing the likelihood of benevolent curiosity. Verité, atmosphere and experimental form combine in a quiet, psychologically tense exploration that assumes humanity is in its intellectual and spiritual infancy.

24 HOURS IN OLYMPIA.

Last weekend I took a drive to Olympia to meet up with Zach Weintraub and Nandan Rao, who one week earlier had begun production on Zach's new movie SLACKJAW. I also met their collaborators Brad Smith and Rob Malone for the first time. This group is up to good things and I'm excited to see the project.

Time in Olympia served as a wonderful pause from the campaign, and provided an opportunity to discuss Zach's character in A MORNING LIGHT, and to weigh out the pros/cons of some potential camera options with Nandan.

Note: Nandan is a fantastic cinematographer and helped shoot my last project MMXIII.

••

FIVE DAYS LEFT!??? Any continued effort sharing the link, retweeting, or emailing to friends and family is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the continued support!

The documentary will be followed by a Q&A / panel discussion and topped off by music from Portland’s AU and Wooden Indian Burial Ground.  Beer and good eats available.

ABOUT THE FILM: This powerful film odyssey across America explores the sea change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers. Dam removal has moved beyond the fictional Monkey Wrench Gang to go mainstream. Where obsolete dams come down, rivers bound back to life, giving salmon and other wild fish the right of return to primeval spawning grounds, after decades with- out access. DamNation’s majestic cinematography and unexpected discoveries move through rivers and landscapes altered by dams, but also through a meta- morphosis in values, from conquest of the natural world to knowing ourselves as part of nature.

A brief q&a panel discussion will follow the screening of DamNation.  We are fortunate to have as panelists ….. (more info to come)

Gilly Lyons, Policy Director for Save Our Wild Salmon, has worked with the organization since 2003 and is based in Portland, Oregon.  The organization is actively involved in restoring healthy wild salmon and steelhead populations to the Snake and Columbia Rivers system, working to develop a plan that helps these populations and moves them away from the risk of extinction.

Brian Kelly, Restoration Director for Hells Canyon Preservation Council actively works to restore fish habitat in the Blue Mountains, Wallowas and the greater Hells Canyon region.  He has led HCPC’s work to protect clean air and water from the impacts of energy developments.

ABOUT THE MUSIC: AU (pronounced “Ay-you”) is the work of multi-instrumentalist Luke Wyland with Dana Valatka on drums and Holland Andrews on vox and clarinet. (WE LOVE THESE PEOPLE – AND ARE SMITTEN EVERY TIME). Happy to take influence from grey skies & early sci-fi novels, Portland’s Wooden Indian Burial Ground brings a fuzzy, sweaty, reverb drenched beast to the dinner table. Come dancing.

ABOUT HELLS CANYON PRESERVATION COUNCIL

Screen Shot 2014-05-06 at 8.11.01 AMBased in La Grande, Oregon, Hells Canyon Preservation Council was founded in the mid-1960s by a very diverse group of persons who had seen too many dams choking the Snake River.  They said “No More” and succeeded in stopping further damming in Hells Canyon, saving the last remnants of the free-flowing Snake River and the lower Salmon River as well.  The establishment of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in 1975 was a result of those efforts.

Since then, their work has spread greatly, both in focus and reach.  Being one of the oldest, most effective environmental groups in the area, Hells Canyon Preservation Council’s is worthy of local support as one of the main sources of wild lands & wildlife protection for almost fifty years!  Get involved and join the band of people fighting for environmental justice in this treasured part of the country.

HAMMER TO NAIL
We were thrilled to have Hammer To Nail’s Paul Sbrizzi out for the festival. You can read his excellent festival recap here! It’s pretty humbling when visitors walk away with such a positive experience from their time in La Grande.

INTERNET SCREENINGS… AT A FILM FESTIVAL?
Yep, and this experimental component was a huge success! EOFF drew hundreds of viewers from all over the globe!!!! Special thanks to Zach Weintraub, Nandan Rao, Elaine McMillon, andNoBudge.com for their involvement. Check out the special collection of VINE‘s here.

FILMMAKER HAPPENINGS
Online Guest Curator (NoBudge x Vine) and EOFF alumni, Kentucker Audley, has sparked debate with his satirical response to the New York Times’ Manola Dargis and Salon’s Beanie Barnes. Their recent criticisms of independent filmmakers led Audley to take a bold, timely position in defense of keeping cinema an accessible, open art form. Whether you’re a filmmaker or film-lover, this is aMUST READ that hits close to home.

Simple Machine is now offering quarterly grants to small, pop-up festivals whose operating budgets will be $1K or less.
The concept is simple: send an email pitch and you might be awarded a grant. Read about the program here.

EOFF programmer Ian Clark continues to take his current project MMXIII deep into the realms of the internet. “Touring” his movie from website-to-website caught the attention of Tribeca—read about the experimental distribution approach here.

MOTHER’S MILK
The other half of EOFF’s programming team, Benjamin Morgan, is gaining momentum on his upcoming project, MOTHER’S MILK. Playing the part of writer/producer, Morgan has brought Boise filmmaker Zach Voss on board to direct. Eastern Oregon Film Festival is testing the waters, proudly extending its non-profit umbrella to assist in the project’s Kickstarter campaign.

ART EXHIBITION: Schnitt!

Stop by the Art Center throughout the festival and take in the art exhibition.

SCHNITT EOFF2014

Schnitt! at the Art Center at the Old Library, February 4 – 27, features new work by Cory Peeke, Director of the Nightingale Gallery and Associate Professor of Art & Art History at Eastern Oregon University.

Cory’s work combines seemingly inconsequential and diverse bits of ephemera to create collages. The works incorporate this remnant imagery in order to construct images that are at once fresh yet familiar. The new amalgamations explore the transient, disposable nature of our culture as well our need for and connection to the printed image.

Dear Rabbit EOFF2014

“The man behind the name is our good friend Rence Liam, who’s been tearing it up with his eccentric attention demanding one-man-band performances across the USA. Imagine attending a secret party thrown by Salvador Dali in an ornate smoke-filled drinking parlor in the dark belly of a creaky frigate with Blackbeard, Captain Beefheart and a bunch of crazed, violent gypsies… Lots of old timey instruments (Accordion, Cornet, Trombone, Banjo, etc.) played very energetically with a near-punk delivery with Rence’s belted lyrics over-the-top.. Quite a spectacle!”

ABOUT LAIKA
LAIKA is an animation studio specializing in feature films, commercials and shorts. Travis Knight serves as President and CEO of the company, which is owned by Nike co-founder and Chairman Philip H. Knight.  More information: www.laika.com.

Boxtrolls_PosterThe Boxtrolls is a stop-motion animated feature based on Alan Snow’s best-selling fantasy adventure novel Here Be Monsters.  Directed by Anthony Stacchi and Graham Annable, produced by David Ichioka and Travis Knight. The voice cast includes: Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan.

The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own.

LAIKA_Logo_Black[1]When the Boxtrolls are targeted by a villainous pest exterminator who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kind-hearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and an adventurous rich girl to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.  Distributed by Focus Features.

CURATOR’S STATEMENT

Thanks to EOFF for asking me to curate some of my favorite Vines. Below are 16 vids from 10 accounts which range from hyper-composed to completely off-the-cuff. Indie filmmakers mixed with ascending Vine celebrities mixed with random teenagers. For better or worse, attention spans aren’t what they used to be, but it’s easy to find the intelligence & creativity stuffed into these 6 second looping videos. A new type of viewing experience that often requires repeat viewings and offers continuous entertainment with new art + comedy — premiering all day on our phones.

- Kentucker Audley

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Kentucker Audley—actor, filmmaker, and curator of NoBudge.com—is a purveyor of true independent cinema. In 2011 he founded NoBudge, an online collection of work by emerging artists working with little-to-no budget. This effort was prompted by the democratization of technology and the need to give a home to lesser-known voices. Also an alumni of Eastern Oregon Film Festival (Team Picture, 2009; Open Five, 2010), we thought he would be the perfect person to present a collection of 6-second videos made using Vine.

GRANDMA KELSEY & EDMUND WAYNE JOIN MUSIC PROGRAM

EOFF2014 is excited to announce that in addition to the after party celebrations with an incredible line-up of visiting and local musicians, festival goers will also be privy to solo acts Edmund Wayne and Grandma Kelsey. These intimate sets will take place prior to the evening features at The Granada Theater.  While patrons file in and find their seats these artists paint a landscape of sound to settle you in – and for the few minutes before the visuals pour on –we listen– quietly, meditatively.

EDMUND-WAYNE-EOFF2014

Friday’s tunes will commence just before the feature presentation of Bernardo Britto’s award winning YEARBOOK and Dave Carroll’s feature documentary, BENDING STEEL. with a short solo performance by the Snohomish, Washington native Edmund Wayne. The deft and compassionate guitarist with a seemingly limitless vocal capacity has Seattle Weekly describing him as, “Harnessing the mood of Andrew Bird and the magnitude of Radiohead, Edmund Wayne’s brand of Alt-Folk in my new favorite thing.” Though he splits his frequent tours with a back-line of seasoned musicians, delivering their down-home, pop-powered, exploratory sound with great zeal, to behold Edmund Wayne on his own is a chance to hear creative freedom soar to new heights— songs morph, deviate, grow and shrink at Wayne’s will, recalling a wholly captivating piece of artistic whimsy akin to the late, great Jeff Buckley.

grandmas-kelsey-eoff-2014

Prior to Saturday evening’s final film block, we welcome back the haunting and prodigious Grandma Kelsey of Boise, Idaho. Whether it’s the intensely slow signature strumming that never seems to drag, the coyote caliber voice, or the shrine of bones, trinkets, and anonymous letters that often joins her on stage, one thing is for certain: this solitary, wingless creature has an ethereal penchant for causing the audience to believe her songs address them individually. Time is suspended, moments are frozen, and spirits come to congregate at the foot of Kelsey’s stories, prayers and declarations.
“With a siren’s voice and an intoxicating stage presence, folk singer Grandma Kelsey ranks alongside the foothills and geothermal power as one of Boise’s greatest natural treasures.” –Boise Weekly

Like us folks of the Grande Ronde Valley, these two artists take time to bask and celebrate in the finer (and often simpler) things in life. Though one hails from the vast sagebrush-laden plains of Southern Idaho, and the other the lush and rain-sopped farmlands of the Snohomish River Valley, both have a nearly indistinguishable approach when it comes to the essence of expression. Without a deep respect for the land in which we live, the friends we have, and the family we nurture, all is a dead end street of loneliness and desolation. No two songwriters from this region better salute the miracle we belong to and it is our sincere privilege to give them our undivided attention at this year’s Eastern Oregon Film Festival.

Justine left to sit quietly by and observe the early signs of her own deteriorating relationship.

SYNOPSIS

Justine, a recent college graduate turned retail employee, lives and works in a nameless city. The film begins when her boyfriend, Zach, leaves to interview for a position at a recently renovated art house movie theater in a small town. He lands the job and together they relocate to an air mattress in his new boss’ garage. Dropped suddenly into an unfamiliar place and stripped of all routine and distraction, Justine is left to sit quietly by and observe the early signs of her own deteriorating relationship. You Make Me Feel So Young is a carefully selected collection of moments from the life of a young woman in transition, and a meditation on the subtly complex questions one often faces in such situations.

Synopsis

An experimental self-portrait, MMXIII explores phenomenological subtlety, intersections of construct and verité, and the ways in which technology, landscape, and beauty coalesce. Here, an artist’s reflexive gestures investigate moving images and the nature of image construction, blurring the lines between cinema, still photography, and performance art.

Hawaiian Punch - EOFF2014

Synopsis

Our boys, when they arrive at years of maturity and can take earn of a wife, should get married…While I do not make the remark to apply to individual cases, I am firmly of the opinion that a large number of unmarried men, over the age of twenty-four years, is a dangerous element in any community, and an element upon which society should look with a jealous eye. For every man knowing himself, knows how his fellow-man is constituted; and if men do not marry, they are too apt to do something worse…

– George Q. Cannon, Apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1878

“Through daily activities and sparse conversation, their true character and uncertain futures become as real and terrifying to the audience as they do to the characters themselves. Rather than action, Rao gives us inaction for clarity.”

Hollow is an interactive documentary and community participatory project that examines the future of rural America through the eyes and voices of those living in McDowell County, W.Va. Hollow combines video portraits, data visualizations, photography, soundscapes, community-generated content and grassroots mapping to bring these stories to life through an online experience.

“It was a little unsettling for me to think of this as a film that had just an end, whereas with Hollow being interactive and a new media project, it’s able to grow and change and develop in new ways. It also allowed us to bring many more voices to the table and cover a lot of issues that now the user can explore at their own interest.”

POV

HOLLOW-OFF2014

“I was interested in the whole reflexive nature that participatory media has on communities. Give someone a camera and allow them to reflect on their life, and you get this footage that is so much more raw and beautiful than if a filmmaker shot it who is worried about cinematography.”

An intimate documentary exploring the lost art of the oldetime strongman, and one man’s struggle to overcome limitations of body and mind.

SYNOPSIS

On a cold February day, a man walks along Coney Island’s boardwalk. He remembers his last visit here as a boy and can’t help but feel the change in atmosphere. The air is devoid of amusement; stores are locked up tight for winter, rides covered and still. The frigid wind whipping off the Atlantic stings his face and the warm rays of sunlight are as distant as his memories. “It’s going to be a very different place in the summertime…”

Bending_Steel_10

Bending Steel is a deeply moving and inspiring documentary from filmmakers Dave Carroll and Ryan Scafuro, exploring the life of 43 year-old Chris Schoeck, a Queens, NY native training to become a professional oldetime strongman. The story follows Chris’ journey from his early days training in his small basement storage unit to his very first performance on the big stage at New York’s historic Coney Island. Alongside his trainer Chris Rider, he meets living legends and heroes within the strongman community. As these characters come alive, a long forgotten time is revisited. The men perform feats that defy limitations of human strength and pain: twisting horseshoes and nails with their bare hands, breaking chains with their hair, and bending coins with their teeth. Chris is learning from the greats. His training is progressing at a remarkable pace… he is determined to become a professional
strongman.

But as the filmmakers follow Chris through his successes and failures, more is uncovered about this endearing yet introverted character. It soon becomes clear that Chris is not only searching for recognition and acceptance within this community, something he hopes will fill a growing void in his life. He is also facing crippling fears and insecurities, many of which are revealed for the first time as the cameras roll. A remarkable innocence is uncovered. The film bears witness to a tenacious man struggling to come out of his shell – to shed both physical and social limitations that have held him back his entire life – limitations that now threaten his dream of success. What unfolds is a touching story of one man’s epic struggle for acceptance and fulfillment, two things which have always seemed just out of his reach.

A married mother of two, unexpectedly pregnant with her third child, answers the phone to hear a voice from her distant past, reconnecting with the central,  though neglected, emotional anchor in her life. In the span of an 80-minute conversation, the two test the strength of a deep yet betrayed, love.

“A bold but never showy bit of innovative filmmaking”

– Marc Mohan – The Oregonian

BUOY-EOFF2014

SYNOPSIS

When T.C., a suburban mother of two, and unexpectedly pregnant with her third child receives a call from Danny, a person from her distant past, she is tidying up her middle-class home in Portland, Oregon. T.C.’s and Danny’s phone conversation comprises the film’s single scene. As the camera tracks T.C. through her household rounds, speaker phone in hand, she and Danny embark on a wide-ranging emotional journey; dialog carries the story. Bittersweet childhood recollections merge into searching spiritual conjectures; bizarre anecdotes lead to offbeat cultural critiques and awkward personal
confessions.

Against a backdrop of long-simmering tensions and enduring sympathies, TC’s and Danny’s conversational saga reveals the deeper stories of their selves and of their relations with each other, while exploring universal questions: What does it mean to be a good person and to live your life well? How do you keep your disappointment in, and envy for, another person’s life choices from standing in the way of your love for her or him? Is it possible to forgive betrayals of the past as you commit one in the present?
